The Oxford Character Project

Founded in 2014, the Oxford Character Project joins cutting-edge research on character and leadership in the humanities and social sciences to the design and delivery of student programmes at the University of Oxford and in partnership with other leading global universities and commercial organisations. We are based at the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford, which is renowned for its Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) degree and has a legacy of nurturing world leaders who have gone on to impact global policy, economics, and social reform.

The University of Oxford has long served as the training ground for political, business, and civic leaders. Over 30 UK Prime Ministers, roughly 40 heads of state, and countless public servants, community leaders, and business executives have studied at the University. At Oxford, we believe that great leaders are driven by their values and purpose, helping those around them to flourish and create cultures where people can achieve their full potential. Hence, our award-winning programmes approach leadership by focusing on key character strengths needed to lead in a world full of unprecedented challenges and incredible opportunities – integrity, compassion, courage, creativity, humility, curiosity, gratitude, and hope. Placing these dynamic human qualities at the heart of life and leadership, our programmes help students reimagine the concept of leadership and put learnings into practice- both in terms of how they live and how they lead. This is inspired by the University’s commitment to “provide a quality of education and experience which equips students with the values, skills, and intellectual discipline that will enable them to make a positive contribution to society”.

Knowledge and skills are important, but it is not enough to know about leadership or develop technical skills in a specific domain. In order to grow as a leader, flourish under pressure and empower others to create positive change, one needs to develop the character strengths that join aspiration to action and theory to practice. We follow seven research-based strategies to create the conditions that enable students to develop their character and become the best versions of themselves.

1. Practice – We are what we repeatedly do
2. Role models – We become like those we look up to
3. Reflection – We learn deeply when experience is followed by reflection
4. Language – We open up new possibilities by inhabiting new stories and adopting new terms
5. Systems – Our awareness of patterns and pressures paves the way for growth
6. Reminders – We achieve consistency to our commitments with the help of nudges
7. Friendships – Our relationships support us to be our best selves, even in difficult times
